History

Prior to 2003, portals could be used by everyone. This, I suppose, would make many containers obsolete, or "not-worth", since portals were free and easy to access.

A shake of the earth was felt this night across the Realms.  The minions of
LaChte began their experimentation with the extradimensional planes.  While
they come closer and closer to bringing wrath from the midst of nothingness,
they have disturbed the realm as we know.  Portals once made from the
extradimensional space, accessible by all have changed forever.  The
extradimensional portals made from this day forward are only accessible to
those who make them and understand their nature.  Through their understanding,
they are now able to imbue the portals with a magical state, allowing a
greater capacity than the portals had before.

This change made extradimensional portals a completely new item, not a re-make of the old one. This means that people who still have the old portals can still use them on any class... or sell them at an absurd price.
