The different alignments allow you to wear different pieces of equipment. To determine if you can wear an item, first identify the item and check the alignments allowed. If you are not of the same alignment(s) allowed, you will not be able to wear the item. If your alignment changes while you are wearing an object that forbids your new alignment, the item will zap off of your body.
Definition
Zapping is what align-restricted equipment does when you don't (or no longer) fit those restrictions. It falls off into your inventory, or if that's full then it drops onto the ground. You will need to realign before you can wear it again.
Examples
A devout cleric, let's call him Tokai, has an alignment of 360. He kills Bahamut, a devout mob, and his alignment drops to 210. This is neutral alignment, so he zaps and has to run off to realign.
