Help File

Your character advances in power by gaining experience. You gain experience
by: (1) inflicting damage upon an opponent, (2) being part of a group that
kills an opponent, or (3) succeeding while learning a skill or a spell
through real world usage. You lose experience by: (1) fleeing from combat,
(2) recalling out of combat, (3) being the target of some spells (energy
drain, etc.), or (4) dying.

The experience received from a kill depends on several factors: how many
players are in your group, your level versus the level of the mob, your
alignment versus the mob's alignment, and random variation. The wisest and
most intelligent of characters will gain experience faster as well.
Additionally, the number of characters in a room on the same IP address
affects the amount of experience received during a fight and on the killing
blow. For example, those playing only one character in the room will receive
a small xp bonus for their singular efforts.

Definition

Leveling is one of two things:

  1. Gaining experience, primarily by killing mobs, in order to raise your level.
  2. Going through the process of (1) in order to hand the character over to someone else at level 50 or an agreed point in exchange for equipment or gold.

If you're interested in (2), inquire on the traffic channel.
