In the game's slang, a class can be seen as your character's profession. It defines, amongst other things:

  • Which skills you will be able to access, at which level and how well you will be able to learn them
  • What will be your primary, secondary and deficent stats, and which bonus you get for them
  • Some special qualities (for example thieves are permanently affected by scrying) as well as limits (for example nephandis must always stay evil or suffer some mental state penalty)
  • The minimum and maximum amount of hitpoints a member of this class can gain when he raises a level, and if there will also be a mana gain or not (for example warriors don't gain mana points when they level, mages do)
  • How easy is for them to land a blow in a melee fight (Thac0, Thac32)
  • How much experience they need to level (for example vampires needs more experience points than warriors to reach avatar)

Because of the above, your character's class deeply affects your gameplay and since after character creation you cannot switch it's important to wisely choose one which best suits your style of playing.
