Deities are magical, mythical beings to whom mortal characters can devote themselves. Some deities will only accept devotees of specific races/classes/alignments/genders and each has different demands of its followers (see each deity's article for more information on it).
Deities are the gods of the Realms of Despair. At present, there are 24 deities that are split up within 3 major religious sects. A'enari, Vl'aresch, Mak'kor, Bael, Sarane, Wirawyth, Estathius and Tempus belong to Arcana Eviae. Bron'trel, LaChte, Kardis, Adendra, Shivvan, Sh'Vath, Ghordohl and Keltas belong to Amnis Umbra. Z'hyal, Gre'Vos, Kalerd, Tirebaen, Cawyn, Sil-Galith, Masefi and Grishnakh belong to Vis Liberata. All of the religious sects exist in a realm known as the Asgard Nexus.

The most important thing about deities is favor. If you please your deity by meeting its needs (e.g. killing Orcs for Ghordohl), your favor will be increased. Do something against your deity's disposition and your favor will decrease. You can 'spend' favor by supplicating for things from your deity (like a recall or your corpse). Each deity also gives you a number of permanent spell affects (e.g. Adendra gives her followers resist poison and protection) which, in some cases, change with your favor level.
At Level 5, players are allowed to devote themselves to a specific deity of their choosing. While the player gets to pick, each deity has their own specific requirements by which they will accept or deny requests for devotion. Some of these guidelines include race, class, alignment, or gender. Once devoted, a player cannot go back to being Agnostic or devote to a new deity until 100 in-game years have passed (200 hours playing). The cost of switching deities is a max negative favor and a penalty of something like temporary blindness, a curse placed upon you, or being transed to a hostile area such as the maze in Morgul Vale - sometimes a combination of penalties, it depends on the deity.

You cannot change your devotion, once you have made it, for 100 years (200 hours of real-time). If you have been with your deity for this period and desire a different one, type
devote none
and you will be freed from your devotion - but you'll be blinded and your favor level will be lowered to hated.
Devoted players get a new statistic called favor. You start out neutral and gain or lose favor depending on your actions and the requirements of your specific deity. At the high and low levels of the favor spectrum you stand to gain buffs or debuffs respectively from your deity. You can also ask your deity for specific things via the supplicate command, these requests cost varying degrees of favor.

Deities should not be confused with Immortals.

Definition
